Rick Berry’s grandmother once imparted this advice on her young grandson: “A man is not fully dressed until he has a hat on.”

Decades later, Berry holds true to those words. “And when I wear my hats,” Berry says, holding a suave chapeau with a chocolate stripe that anchors a feisty sprig of feathers, “I wear it with a little slide, like this.”

With a flick of his wrist, he dips his hat due South, conjuring images of those roarin’ ’20s.

“When I was growing up in Chester, Third Street was the place to be on Saturday afternoons and evenings,” the 69-year-old explains. “And if you weren’t dressed, you’d get laughed at.”

The old-school notion of the art of dress is tops in Berry’s book.

“As a teenager, tailor-made shirts and pants were all the rage, but that’s falling out of favor,” he laments. “I can’t find a good tailor nowadays.”  (Rest of Article)

The training and study of several different martial arts just to be able to say I know them is not my style. I believe in being practical. Multi-tasking is not conducive to my wellbeing. Multi-tasking leads to many problems.

After encouragement from my brother-in-law from whom I borrowed several black belt magazines, I stepped on the martial arts path. What I read about people like Gogen ‘the cat” Yamaguchi, Mas Oyama and Tsutomu Ohshima was impressive. Their many accomplishments were inspirational. All of the stories and articles published in those magazines were fascinating and made me want to train in karate. Back then the mystique of karate was bigger than life. To think that a man could shatter bricks and wooden boards with his bare hands was almost unbelievable.   (Rest of Article)


The Basic Punch
Alignment Can Help Or Hurt You

No matter how many years you have studied the martial arts, it’s always important to examine and work to perfect your basics.

This article is going to do just that. Here, we examine one of the primary moves of martial arts: the basic straight punch. For some of you, this information may be familiar, but for many it will provide new food for thought.

We will begin by examining some of the common injuries that occur from improper structural alignment in the basic punch. We will then discuss proper hand, wrist and arm alignment for a punch, and how the force of the punch is absorbed within the body.
